Captain Consistent I am not. Yet again it's been far too long since I blogged, and frankly since I hobbied.

This time I have a defense; 14 months ago I headed back to school to retrain. Those of you that know me personally know that I'd been in academia, either as a researcher or an administrator for about 20 years. Once that came to an end I chose to go back to school.

I retrained as a Gas Turbine technician, and last summer graduated near the top of my class. In October I was fortunate enough to get hired into a company expanding from Montreal into Vancouver (I'm in Montreal training as I write this). Now with some stability and a pay check I'm back at the hobby!

Friday was the traditional (not for liking, just traditional!) panic registration for AdeptiCon, to secure the events you want, and the registration level you desire.
This year was no different from past ones; server crashes, huge lags, and items getting dropped from your cart before you had chance to pay for them!

Drama aside.... I got the Horus Heresy events I wanted! The singles tournament, a Zone Mortalis event, and the HH Grudge Match on the final day. I'm REALLY happy to be going back to AdeptiCon after missing it in 2017.

It's going to be awesome!

The next day my plan initiated; I had a Forgeworld "wish list" sitting there, goading me... I pulled the trigger and ordered an entire Horus Heresy Blood Angels army - 2500pts. Thank goodness I've been paid extra while training away from home...

So, hopefully in about 2 weeks I'll have an "army" to share with you.
Well, a large stack of resin in boxes...

After letting the model sit for the night I went back and beat up the top layer some more. I felt it was lacking damage - lol!

I also went into the larger areas and added some more SWM rust:

Then the fun began!
After a coating with gloss varnish (allowed to dry overnight), I started with oils.
Black, blue and brown oil paint was added in small dots, and then streaked down the model. This adds depth and tone to the overly bright metallic finish. It is a very messy process, but it is the one stage I enjoy the most.

Once that had dried, the next stage was adding pigments to simulate rust build up. I used the SWM powders of course! Four rust powders, and the Violet powder were used.
The violet is quite important as it add a certain patina to the finished result.
This process is very experimental and you need to play with the powders as you go along.

I also used the Exhaust Black on the exhausts (...).

Final stage was to seal with a matte varnish.
This picture has the body complete; the tracks need some highlighting, and the wheels (which I'll comment on next time) are in progress. You'll also note I added a dozer blade.

This is where I give a little something of my idea away.
My long time intent was to build an ork army that were obsessed with Iron Warriors; this is essentially the test model. Best part is, if I don't like it, it'll be fine; its metallic, and its orks!

First layer was Vallejo Model Air Gun Metal, followed by VMA Steel on higher points. It did this as the washes I'll be applying later will darken it up quite a bit.

I've had a few questions about airbrushing; the usual "how much do you dilute your paints?", "which brand of paint?", and "what pressure do you use?"
There really is only one answer to these questions; "yes" :).

Jokes aside, airbrushing is a very personal technique. This is what works for me:

Harder & Steenbeck Infinity

0.15mm needle (for pretty much everything...)

10-12 psi, though I'll go up to 15-20 for metallics

dilute paints with 8% isopropyl alcohol

paints used are Badger Minitaire, Vallejo Model Colour, Vallejo Model Air, P3, FW Airbrush paints, Scale75... and I guess we can now add Secret Weapon Miniatures!

The end result is... metallic. (I also did the obligatory hazard stripes)

then the work started...
Using light scratches to open up the paint, I applied water, and started rubbing with cotton buds.
At this point I'm always the least happy with the model; the base coat is too bright, and the scratches are too cartoonish. The next part will remedy that.

I had one issue with this stage. For whatever reason, some of the SWM acrylics I put down on the primer came up. I may not have allowed enough time for the Gun Metal to dry fully before starting the removal.
Nice thing is, I can go in and stipple some more paint on later!
If I get to that stage today, I'll post an update.Jason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619680164828715865.post-46663189797595786032016-04-09T21:55:00.001-07:002016-04-09T21:59:02.547-07:00Weathering in Style - Pt1Hey all!

It has been a while - hit a bit of a painting funk late last year, and then got into intense mode with AdeptiCon 2016 prep.
The event was amazing as usual, but I'll post more about that later.

This post is about weathering - specifically a new line of Weathering Acrylic paints just released by our friend misterjustin at Secret Weapon Miniatures.

I've grabbed an old model, from a much delayed project, to try them out on, and of course I'm going to share my personal vision on a few of their many possible uses.

This Ork Battlewagon had a red and blue paint job - so I hit it with some rattle-can Rust-Red primer - which cost all of $3! The wheels and turrets were popped off first.

Then I started it with the SWM Weathering Acrylics. I have to say I've got a whole new respect for Reaper (who produced the paints for SWM); their pigments are phenomenal quality, and the medium always seems perfect.
I pushed these through my airbrush, so they needed diluting. Quite a lot too - lots of pigment packed in there. I have to give these paints an A* rating, just from the first set I've used. And I have to give big props to Justin; these are the rust colours that you troll through other lines to find single examples of, or spend ages trying to mix.

I don't have a colour-by-colour series, but they went on in the following order:

Rust Shadow - this is quite green, so it went into areas where I wanted the darkest, oldest rust to be represented.

Old Rust - this went over the Shadow, to add some purple/brown depth, and into panel recesses.

Brown Rust

Red Rust

Orange Rust - these last three went on in a random-ish pattern, trying to break up the surface features, whilst trying to keep the lighter ones near the top.

You'll note I didn't use the Yellow Rust from this Weathering Set; this one is more transparent, and I'll be using it later to represent staining.

Chipping medium - light on the panels, heavy on the working surfaces - was then sprayed on. This is drying overnight.

Tomorrow I'll be doing some masking and starting the base colouring.

Stay tuned!Jason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619680164828715865.post-5687755005521039562015-08-01T21:54:00.000-07:002015-08-01T21:54:26.818-07:00an oldie...Found this picture (I still have the model boxed away).

The OFCC (Ordo Fanaticus Club Challenge) tourney is one of the PNW's premier events.
I've attended a number of times (I've actually lost count!), and had a really good time each one. I've also had some success there, being on one Overall Champion team, and one team that won the Best Sportsmanship award (which is named after, and dedicated to the to the memory of, one of the event founders - Marshall Johnson).

This year the event has been sweetened by the inclusion on the ITC list for 2015.

The organizers have also added an Open event, and a few Friday mini-tourneys. Sadly I can't attend these on Friday as I'll be returning from France a couple of days beforehand, and will be relying on my other Club's team Captain, Chris Jones, to drive me down to Vancouver, WA.

Whilst the 40K team event is well populated this year (21 teams of 4), it looks like the uncertainty around 9th edition Fantasy, and the mess that End Times made, that the WHFB side will be a little sparse this year - 9 teams last time I looked.
40K has not been without its controversies; the Head of Gaming (HoG) has removed all formal composition this year, so unbound armies, experimental rules, and multiple formations are allowed. The only caveat being that the army, an team's armies as a whole, need to be in the spirit of the event.

Sitting on whats' known as the "list Review Committee" has been quite educational about different region's perspectives on army builds; and I have a whole new respect for the HoG - I've not run a tourney since 5e!

My team does not have a theme this year (it was "death" last year), but as we are all taking Knights, from one source or another (including GK Dreadknights), I'm going with "Knights; F**k Yeah!"

I'm running the World Eaters that I took to AdeptiCon (they are almost finished...), with the addition of.... a Knight!

This is the Questoris Knight Styrix; probably the crappiest of the Knights!

These are from my first 40k army. Bought from the Third Edition box set, which I bought on advance order from GW Canada, back in later 1998...
Ultimately they were my first tournament army, playing them at the Seattle GT in 1999.

I've has a long time affinity with the Marines Errant, always thinking of them as a "knightly" Chapter with parallels to Arthurian legend.

In the first picture is a RT era Chaplain... yep it is old, and it is original - I still have the blister with the rest of them in (at one time GW sold them in packs of THREE!). The Command Squad uses old Dark Angel Veteran cloaked models - again metal.

The Chapter Icons are hand painted... all of them...

The pictures were taken on a photo-backdrop from Hangar 18; I obviously chose one to contrast. These are fantastic vinyl printed sheets, which come in a variety of colours, and are very tolerant to handling. You can find them here; they are an excellent investment.

The bases are quite dated (not just in size) so they are going to be upgraded shorty across the whole army.
I'm using the Dragon Forge Design Ancient Ruins II bases that I got in their recent Kickstarter campaign.

Old gaming friend and talented hobbyist Alex Akers made some custom bases for my army. I talked about these in a previous blog post.

At the time of sculpting the largest base GW had in production was a 60mm, and the flying base came out as Alex was finishing the project. He did sculpt some, but I'm not sure what happened to the master model.

So with a flyer in my army I needed to get creative!

Some cork, some plasticard, some skulls (Secret Weapon Miniatures), pumice from Vallejo, metal from one of GW's basing sets, some mouse bones (yes, really) and about 20 minutes of work....
(The masking tape is there for the flight stand. Peels off nicely when all is dry.)

This sloppy mess:

I've not had enough time to do full weathering on the units, but I will be adding chipping to everything, and some significant paint damage to the vehicles.

The army has been a absolute blast to paint; less than 3 months from start to finish (nothing like having a hard deadline). I learned a lot about both modelling with resin, which surprised me considering how many years I've been doing it, and how to airbrush. Airbrushing is now my new "hobby" passion - it is such a powerful tool to have in your kit.
I'll be adding to the HH force with units from other Legions, aiming to use signature units such as a Breacher Squad in Sons of Horus colours, and heavy weapons as Iron Warriors. The World Eaters will get a Contemptor Dreadnought at some point, only because there is a cool one in the first HH book, and I have a slot for one in my Battle Foam tray..

More pictures to follow, some shots from AdeptiCon I'm sure.
If you are there, come by the Friendly on Friday - that's where this army will be playing!
I'll post my World Eaters WIP page once I've headed south (and then east).

Looking forward to catching up with old friends, making new ones, and 4 days of silliness!Jason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619680164828715865.post-27236313106917743942015-01-08T11:07:00.000-08:002016-04-09T22:09:38.767-07:00an interlude.Whilst I write drafts of my AdeptiCon progress... whilst actually preping for the event... I've been playing in a couple of events.

On January 1st we had a tourney at our local store, titled "No Rest for the Weary". Yes, some people were hung over, but as a) I have kids, and b) I'm old, I was not one of them - I was in bed by 11pm!
It was a fun event with no soft scores, but some limitations on composition (no SH, LoW, smaller fortifications only...).
Some how I managed to go 3-0, and lost out on overall by one point (I tied my secondary objective in the final game and got zero battle points for it.... grrr..).
It was a really good event, and the turn out bodes well of a revitalization of year round, small, tourney events in the Metro Vancouver area.

Next up is Vancouver's first Highlander event, for which I suggested the name of "Toss Yer Caber" (it is being run by a Scot..) which stuck.

I have a hankering to play my Space Wolves - for the first time with the new codex.

Since 7e came out I've been somewhat skeptical about the psychic phase, hell I've historically avoided magic in Warhammer for many years. But with the Wolves I had an idea.

The HH books, in particular the Prospero arc, have hinted at the Wolves' belief that their powers are not warp driven but is "earth magic" from Fenris. This I can embrace. To this end I have been toying with the idea of the Malefic Powers, specifically the summoning of daemons; or in the case of Space Wolves "Spirits of Fenris".
The whole project took about 5 hours.

Here is my "Greater Daemon of Fenris". Built from a WE Treeman (obviously!). I'll run it as a Bloodthirster.

Consequently I've not been able to prime the bases.

I'm taking the "down time" to build marines. Though I have a bit of a dilemma whether to run them as Space Marines, or Chaos Space Marines, for the AdeptiCon events I'm playing in.
Luckily at this point I don't have to firm up my choice, as the models and list I have can switch between either.Jason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619680164828715865.post-90291136557033619192014-11-26T16:38:00.002-08:002015-01-09T11:13:32.044-08:00Road to AdeptiCon 2015 - Part 1(b) - BasesAs I posted on Monday I successfully survived AdeptiCon... well the registration portion - which is no mean feat unto itself!
Now, with a mere 113 days until the event (112 until I fly), it is time to get on with the project.

A couple of years ago a group of us were going to play in the team event. It was the first year after the Forgeworld Heresy books had been announced, so we decided to go with a 40k 30K-Heresy theme.
Unfortunately one of the team fell ill quite early on in the process, so it was dropped.

I still have all the models, so for 2015 I'll be completing the army. And by completing I mean starting!

For the event one of the guys sculpted and cast vast quantities of Istvaan themed bases for us.

So today's update is base prep.

Stage one - wash! I use Simple Green (which is a good degreaser). I can't stress this enough - wash your models. This is especially true for resin models which have a demolding compound on them from casting. It also applies to metal models which often have a powder releasing agent, as well as plastic sprues which may have oil from the steel/aluminium dies.

The number of times that I read about bad primer reactions, or paints flaking off later on is astonishing. This simple step can dramatically help reduce the fail rate of primer/paint adhesion.

The other one is using the right (and an actual) primer. But that is for next time!

AdeptiCon Registration
(queue mood drums).

Yep, at 6pm PST, me and about 1000 (literally) other gamers logged on to the new (and vastly improved) webcart and attempted to register for our desired events.

After 20 minutes of "ogodthisissoslowdon'tyoudaretimeoutonmewherethefuckaremyclassesandwhyismyzonemortaliseventsoldoutwhenIhadaspot"
I was registered. Phew!

Now begins the countdown - only 114 days until AdeptiCon 2015 and I have an army to build and paint.

I'll be sharing.Jason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619680164828715865.post-50225455463158579442014-09-17T17:22:00.000-07:002014-09-17T17:30:52.769-07:00Staying OrganizedLike many of you I get distracted... ::squirrel::

Forgeworld comes out with a new model (shiney!), or a new codex is published and the obligatory new stuff that comes along with it catches your attention.

This is probably why I have 15 armies for 40k that exceed 2000 points - painted...

So when it comes to the "crunch" how can we keep on top of the priority projects and keep the "squirrels" out of sight?

Recently a few of us have taken to using KanbanFlow tables. These work on the principles of Lean management. Fundamentally they are a visualization tool of your work; allowing to keep track of progress, and in the case of the paid version track efficiency.
I, of course, use the free tool.

This is my current chart. The "abandoned projects" column was a recent addition... bloody Space Wolves Codex.

I colour code by army, or in the case Yellow, generic hobby stuff.

This tool has been very useful to me, especially for the recent Deathwatch project. It is also nice to see your units "march" across the columns!

Off to wash the latest purchase... Mr S.Loth!Jason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619680164828715865.post-33059766069950742112014-09-05T15:45:00.003-07:002014-09-06T00:40:50.327-07:00Deathwatch MarinesI've had this project on my table for about 3 years. In that time two versions of 40k have been born, and two Space Marine Codexes have also popped up. Sadly the Inquisitional codexes have gotten crappier, with less "canon" being followed, and more game play emphasis creeping in.

Also in that time, my club-mate Nick has built and played with his Deathwatch army quite a few times!

Well now it is my turn...

With the Ordo Fanaticus Club Challenge just a few weeks away (literally), A-Club Overachievers will be representing again. We'll talk more about our theme after the tourney, but I'm anticipating a fun team event in Portland.

My idea is to go with a Iron Hands themed list, that is fast and hard hitting.
In the Deathwatch, Marines are recruited from many chapters, and are lead by a Captain. That Captain's background often dictates the tactics the squads employ (DW Marines are usually deployed in small highly specialized units, but for the tourney these guys are responding en masse to a larger threat). As you can tell from the pictures I have used shoulder pads from just about every (loyalist!) chapter that FW and GW has produced them for. I have also used a couple of 3rd-party pads to represent chapters I have an affinity with.

(please forgive the poor photo quality. With my lens in the mail to Canon I had to resort to my iPhone which lacks the depth of field capacity, and was attached to my slightly shaky hands!)

My commander; converted from a FW Praetor, the Command backpack, the Storm-shield from the Games Day Boarding Marine a few years ago, and a terminator fist to attach the shield to the chopped (oh, it hurt cutting that gun off!) arm.
Heavy support comes from the Thunderfire Cannon, which I have learned to love in game play almost as much as I hated putting the horrible thing together!
There are also two Deathstorm drop pods (which were actually the inspiration for the army).
As you can tell, I have gone with a resin base, using the fantastic Wastelands ranges from Dragon Forge Design. The Stormtalons are mounted on a flying kit (mount under the flyer and rod), and DFD will drill out the base to take the plexiglass rod.

Sadly my Canon lens with macro ability has died, and it is on its way to Mississauga for repairs.

I'll attempt to take some interim shots with my iPhone tomorrow.
Like they'll be the same as a 7D.Jason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619680164828715865.post-85793192467097822722014-08-07T15:21:00.000-07:002015-01-08T11:52:00.345-08:00Update... yes, really!Holy F**K!

It has been 4 years since I last posted on here...

The scary part is that I have not done much new since then. Sure, we have got a new version (or was that two!) of 40k, and all the codexes have been reworked....

Well my friends I have news; I'll be posting my first new project since 2010 shortly!

I've been working on a new army for Astronomi-Con Vancouver (which was unfortunately cancelled yesterday) and the Ordo Fanaticus Club Challenge in September.

As I'm off work I've been able to get a lot done, and if that situation continues I may be able to complete older projects like my Traitor Imperial Guard... errr... Astra Militarium Hereticus... errr... Blood Pact.
I'll be sharing some hobby stuff too.

Honest.Jason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619680164828715865.post-71342489713968147322010-08-24T15:10:00.000-07:002014-08-19T12:07:31.620-07:00Not dead....... well a little!

It has been a crazy summer so far. For one it has been too hot to paint most days, and work has been full of "surprises"!

Sadly I had to skip out of Astronomi-Con this past weekend, but my club mates and buddies did a great job without me there (;p). Nick took Best Overall, and Les took Best Sportsman - congrats guys.
Of course Nick has a coveted "Golden Ticket" now...

One good thing came out of my flying visit to the event; I was inspired and I actually put paint to plastic on Saturday evening! Yes, I've started on the last 500pts of my Blood Pact army - for next year's Astro'.
I may find a tourney sooner to attend - GottaCon in Victoria is back on for 2011, plus there is the Seattle ConQuest GT is in January...
This was the latest GW Tournament Circuit qualifier, held in Victoria (well Saanich actually), on Vancouver Island.
Took the ferry over on Friday afternoon, along with fellow A-Club-er Nick Daniels. Les Sohlier took the ferry 1 hour ahead of us.
After checking in at the sketchy (and we would find out how much so later) Howard Johnson we headed over to the venue. GottaCon was held in a local community/rec' centre. We were using the indoor basketball/tennis courts as our space, so it was well lit and well ventilated!
First impression of the set up was good - lots of table space (side bars!) and good terrain. It turned out that ~80% of the terrain belonged to the tournament organizer - quite impressed by that.
We took a look over the scenarios and the scoring sheet; we were not so impressed by that - they were using the much hated Massacre system.. So after a bite to eat, and some lively debates about rules we normally let slide in the club (such as how to do multiple combats correctly!) it was time to sleep... or try to. It so happens that our hotel hosted a seedy bar, which generated multiple conflicts during the night, and we were also disturbed by sirens down the street - there has been a shooting murder. In Victoria? W.T.F.

Saturday was a wonderful Spring morning (yes, the Winter Olympics start this week...), and boded well for the day's festivities....

I had elected to run my Penitent list (again), yes it has it's weaknesses, but it is pretty and fun, and I really don't care!

Cannoness, with multi-melta Celestians, in HF-Immolator

2 units of Arbites (5) in Rhinos.

10 battle Sisters (HF, FL, VSS with SB) in Rhino

2 units of 2 Penitent Engines

14 Sisters Repentia with Priest

Inquisitor with PW

Callidus Assassin

Game 1

Opponent - Ric Jesson - Guard.

Mission - Dawn of War; Primary - Annihilation, Secondary - Capture and Control

Ric set up first, strung out on his back edge with a few units held in reserve (I'll post pictures later), I deployed aggressively as I wanted to get into combat as soon as possible.
As you can imagine I took a lot of fire, but the game swung my way on turn 2. My Callidus Assassin popped out - next to his unit of 10 Rough Riders. She "flamed" 6 of them down (they passed their morale some how) but then she chopped the rest down in combat. The next turn she repositioned. On turn 4 she went after the psyker choir (and Primaris), shooting and killing them in a similar manner. Turn 4 she stumbles - charging into an infantry squad, she must have been tired... it took two turns to take them down! On turn 7 (yes, one finally went my way!), she cooked the crews of the 3 sentinels that had been a thorn in my side for most of the game.
For those of you at home keeping score - 120 pts of 2 wounds, T4, S4 chick took out 612 points of Guard.
Sweet!

Result - Primary - win, Secondary - tie.
Minor Victory - 17 battle points gainedIf it had not been for the Assassin ripping through the back line it would have gone VERY differently. Ric was a very good sport about the whole thing, and his army was stunningly converted (it was one of my 3 favourites on the weekend).

Game 2

Opponent - James Allen - Ultramarines.

Mission - Spearhead; Primary - Capture and Control, Secondary - Big Game Hunt (kill most expensive unit).

Well this game did not start off well. As soon as I saw his list there was a problem. He was 2 points over. This did not seem to concern him, nor did the TO want to do anything about it (did not want to cause a "fuss"). What really got my goat was James was unrepentant about this... not a sign of contrition on his part (nor did he change his list over the rest of his games).
His list was VERY hard hitting - 2 Vindicators, LR with TH/SS termies, Sternguard in drop pod (with Librarian), 2 Tactical squads in Rhinos and Scout squad with Telion.
Well the game was over on turn 1... his Sternguard dropped in and flamed my Repentia (both these were our most expensive units). They dealt 18 wounds to a 17 wound unit. I did manage to run around and take out the two Vindicators, the terminators, and most of the Sternguard - sadly my Assassin (must have been pooched from game 1) failed to kill off the last of the Sternguard.

Result - Primary - loss, Secondary - loss.
Massacre!- 0 battle points gainedHorrible and controversial...

Game 3

Opponent - Scott James - Space Wolves.

Mission - Pitched Battle; Primary - Annihilation, Secondary - Center of the Table.

Good job there was no rule about unpainted models! Whilst James' army was beautifully converted, only 1 unit dogs had been "washed"... and I think that those were the only models that had been primed. This saddens me, especially when I've taken so long to paint my own army, often for people who can not appreciate the effort or the results. But I digress...

This game was interesting - a two-in-one type of game. The dogs did a good job forcing my units to commit to them (Rage rules), and bogging me down whilst they chipped away at me. Canis Wolfborne is a beast (!), and it took a lot to get rid of him (the Callidus did it in the end). The 3 units of Grey Hunters then did the mop up. In the end it was close, 11 KPs to 9, but due to the Massacre system that was enough, along with the Secondary, to give Scott the Massacre win.

Result - Primary - loss, Secondary - loss.
Massacre!- 0 battle points gainedIf James' army had been painted he would have received a lot more points - it was a fun game, which I thought I had on turn 3, but the GHs were just too much for the little of my army that was left. It is games like this which remind me of why I despise the old GW Massacre system so much, and how systems like they have at OFCC, and at Conquest, are much better.

Game 4

Opponent - Stew Murray - Tau.

Mission - Spearhead; Primary - Seize Ground (4 objectives), Secondary - Assassination (Destroy enemy HQ).

This table had a LOT of terrain, with a bastion and barriers in the middle. I finally one a dice roll, and chose to go first - it was a deliberate move, I wanted to dominate the table. I set up aggressively with the Engines to either side of the bastion, and with the rest of my army split evenly behind them and to their flanks.
Stew chose to keep all his suits (3 identical elite units, plus the obligatory HQ), one (of his two) Hammerheads, and two 'fish mounted 6 man squads in reserve. I asked him to clearly state how they would be entering "all suits will deep strike" was his response. Cool I thought! This left him with one hammerhead, two Broadsides and two 6-man fire warrior squads to deploy. He deployed them in the farthest corner.
Turn 1 was pretty quiet - I think I just moved up my units, and his shooting was ineffectual. Turn 2 saw my Assassin turn up, she immediately went after the Broadsides, destroying both of them, and she also inflicted one glancing damage to the hammerhead - which immobilized it! I love my assassin... Stew pulled in his HQ and 2 units of suits on turn 2. When he walked his commander on the board edge (to go after my assassin) I questions the move. He said he had indicated that the HQ would walk on... O.K. And I must have misheard him (well I am 41 and decrepit!). One unit of suits came in at the "north" of the table, and did little damage to the Engines up there. The other came in "south" and engaged the repentia (thank you!). My next turn I wiped out both units in HtH. I also went after the troops that had been deployed initially - burning one away with a remaining engine (one had been destroyed by the immobilized hammerhead). Turn 4 I went after the remaining 6 man unit - immobilizing my Immolator 2" too short to burn them off with the Inferno cannon... The HQ deployed, and would have to do it on foot the next turn. My Assassin had been taken down by combined fire from the the fire warriors and the HQ. My battle sister squad went after the two transports and the hammerhead that had come in on Stew's 3rd turn. With some luck, and an Act of Faith, I was able to immobilize one of the 'fish. Stew's final unit that had been "delayed" in turn 2, can in again and again it mishap-ed - so I put in in difficult terrain (::evil::) - he made all 3 tests, right by my repentia (:: VERY evil::). Of course I wiped them out... My HQ shot (but did not break) the fire warriors sitting on one of the objectives (I was planted on two others, and one was up for grabs, though I contested it with a Rhino). Stew moved in to my deployment zone and took the objective from the Arbites.
Turn 6 I moved my sisters back to hold one objected, and booted their Rhino, that had been contesting it, over to the one I just lost. I made a HUGE mistake at this point. Instead of my HQ going after the lone fire warrior, who had pulled back from the objective, I went after the hammerhead, and wiffed. Stew punished that unit - taking them off the board, and as his warrior had moved up to the objective I could no longer contest that one. His hammerhead took out the SoB Rhino that had been contesting the one in my zone. Game over!

Result - Primary - tie, Secondary - loss.
Loss - 7 battle points gainedJason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3619680164828715865.post-42967645094623496192010-01-25T18:07:00.000-08:002015-01-08T14:09:54.689-08:00Trygon and Mawlocso back to the fun stuff...

These took about 2 hours to paint, I'll base them later when I have a few more tyranid models to do. I'm liking the look of the Codex so far, and look forward to trying out new combo's.
I'm sure I'll be one of about 50 Tyranid players at AdeptiCon!
This happened to be my 30th GT since 1999 when I played my first at the same location (and on the same weekend IIRC).
This was the second year of this particular event, and by far a huge improvement over last year's. Yes, there were some "drama Llamas" out there over the club that had been scheduled to run it pulling out at the last minute (2 weeks "notice"), but the organizers pulled an excellent team together, and they worked on terrain for 2 weeks solid (one guy put in over 100 hours alone) and made the show work. I had a great time, and I look forward to next year's event (I'll blog my games when I have more energy).

Now those of you who read my blog (on the infrequent times I update it...) may recall last years write up and the shit-storm over the play-what-you-display issue. Now, I'll be the first to agree that this was not a breach of the rules per se. There is no such rule (well there is now!), but damn it was a thrashing of the spirit of our hobby, and as we English are fond of saying - it was not cricket (!).

The same guy was back this year. Predictably of course - he came second last year, and was gunning for a trip to Vegas. This is a going to be an on going problem with the way GW has designed this Circuit - everyone wants to kick ass... but I digress.

Once it was known he was playing there was a collective groan, and there was even a move to have him blocked from the event. We all knew going into the gaming room what his reputation was, and everyone pretty much dreaded a match up against him (I both dreaded and wanted one!). Well it turned out he played true to his nature. Comments about bad sportsmanship, whining when models were removed, slow play, pre-measurement - these were all in abundance all weekend. And lo and behold, at the end of day Sunday he walks off with the Overall Championship - and that treasured spot in Vegas.
Few applause, no hand shakes from enthusiastic buddies, no "well done mate!"...
So I hear a "WTF?" from you... yeah me too... I did not get to play him, and as all my games went to turn 5 or 6 I did not get chance to see the games. But others did... and they video taped it!

One of those videos can be found here, there is also a good commentary by the videographer here.

It is obvious from this footage that the player did cheat. You know what really got my goat about this? He scored 47/50 on Sportsmanship... yeah the same as ME. Me, who has won 4 GT Sportsmanship awards, who owns up to his mistakes openly, politely calls all his opponents on errors and scores his opponents fairly. FRAK.

So how did he get away with it - for all FIVE games. The opponents let him. Simple.
They. let. him.

Either they were scared of him (he is a big guy), or they did not want their scores affected by him sandbagging (chipmunking) them, or they were too stupid to realize the implications (which I doubt in this case). But either way, no one had the balls to stand up for what is right in the game - fair play.

Now some will argue that the Judges should have intervened. Well, firstly no one told them about it until after the fact. Secondly, note their role - Judges - not one of 3 Referees in a Soccer game, not one of 5 (?) in an NFL game looking for infractions, or even 3 in an NHL game. A Judge, who weighs evidence presented to them, and makes a decisions based on that evidence. Let's face it, in a room of 60 active tables, you can not have 60 "referees" watching the games. It is beholden upon the players to do something about it.

Complaining (even legitimately) after the fact is too late folks.

As a result of these videos, and player discussion, a tourney organizer has taken the bold step of banning the player in question. I applaud this, however, the Seattle GT has been sullied by this player (and I hope he gets beat down badly when he plays in Vegas, 'cos I know some of the guys who play at that level well, and they will NOT tolerate his BS!) two years in a row.

Will it ever recover its reputation as one of the best on the circuit? I played in the first 5 GTs that were held in Seattle, and of the first 20 or so I played in they were the best. I hope it does. But that will take a shift - a shift in the attitude of players; stand up for the hobby! A shift in organizer's attitudes - be willing to ban a bad player. And an education for this individual in the wrongness of what he has done to our hobby.

I hope I can be a part of all three of those "shifts".
Because I love this hobby.Jason Dyerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03953727986944189208noreply@blogger.com6
